During the 2010-11 school year, I began my practical M.S. course with a course involving teaching night classes to adult ESL learners. I only taught for 3-4 nights each semester, but these beginning experiences have still shaped my teaching to date.
In the fall of 2010, I began my ESL teaching with a group of advanced adult ESL learners. These girls were so advanced, they had better English than some of the instructors in the program! They didn't really need a great deal of help in learning English, so I designed something to help them learn about American culture. Sticking to our group theme of traveling, I made a short few lessons on Hollywood and the movies. The students were engaged in some of the content, but other pieces didn't seem to work very well. I took what I learned from this experience into my next one.
For my second experience, I taught adult ESL beginners in a unit about houses and homes. This unit went very well. The students had very little English, but they were able to understand as I built on prior knowledge and previous learning from the term. I tried to connect my lessons with those that would come before and others that would come after. I also did a much better job with my technological aspects and hands-on learning activities.
I have attached the lesson plans for both units below. I have also included a video clip from my second teaching experience.
