While student teaching at Craig Elementary in Niskayuna, I created a unit based on nursery rhymes for a set of primarily beginning level Kinder ESL learners. The unit focuses on letter and sound identification through the use of nursery rhymes. It also builds vocabulary through using song and repetitions as well as related crafts to help children learn and retain new words.
I taught most of this unit during my time at Craig, only being forced to leave out "Mary had a Little Lamb" due to time constraints. The unit worked well, with students actively engaged in learning new songs, rhymes, and words. The retention rate was higher for vocabulary than rhymes with each student able to identify previously covered vocabulary as the unit wore on. In all, it was a big success, sticky fingers and all. (For sticky fingers, see 1 Fish, 2 Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish craft pictures.)
